Walk into Blackburn Park or Skyland Park any day this fall and you will find something closer to neglect, or what looks like neglect: patches of grass left tall and shaggy where the mowers used to run every week.
Both are the same city spending money on the same promise. They just landed eight years apart, and they look nothing alike.
The Party Track: Murphey Candler's Eight-Year Payoff
Brookhaven residents voted on a parks bond in November 2018, and the largest single line item in that referendum, $8,984,138, went to what the city called Murphey Candler Park I. The scope was specific: lake dredging, a boardwalk, a new community building, trail renovations, a pedestrian bridge, expanded parking, and a horseshoe-shaped playground rebuilt from scratch. That is not a rounding error inside a $40 million bond. It is the single biggest bet the city made on any park in Brookhaven.
The build-out took years, as these things do. The playground itself only became possible after the Resurgens Charitable Foundation stepped in with a $75,000 grant, matched by donations to the Murphey Candler Park Conservancy, the volunteer group that has been pushing this project alongside the city since before the bond passed. Neither park was ever going to get a Murphey Candler-sized event. But this August, both quietly got something else. The city's Arborist Division began planting Piedmont Prairies at Blackburn and Skyland, open habitat plots of tall native grass and wildflowers meant to hold eroding slopes in place and support the bees, butterflies, and birds that a mowed lawn cannot. General admission runs $125 this year, up from $85 in 2025, and VIP tickets have jumped to $250 from $125, but the VIP tier now includes a full premium bar, a gift bag, and complimentary valet on top of last year's rooftop hour under the City Centre's open-air Cherry Blossom Dome. That is not just a price increase. It is a heavier ticket built around a heavier experience, and organizers are already telling people the room tends to sell out.
Then, on October 17 and 18, the Brookhaven International Festival returns to Brookhaven Park at 4158 Peachtree Road, the same site it had before a one-year move to Lenox Park in 2025.
